The Environment Department have agreed plans for the refurbishment of the North Plantation which includes the building permit. This has been achieved by a close liaison of the appointed Architects Lovell Ozanne, the planning Officers and the project manager.

Many agencies which included States Departments, the Police,Property Owners and owners of businesses in the area have been consulted which has resulted in arriving at the most suitable design for the area which has received the support of the Constables of St Peter Port.

The total cost of the scheme which includes the Plantation itself, the roadway from the Thomas De La Rue public House to the Crown Pier  as well as the frontage of the Visitor Information Centre, has been estimated at £600,000 of which the old Board of Administration committed £50,000.

The first phase involves moving the Guernsey Electricity sub station into the rear of the visitor Information Centre. To achieve this an oil boiler has been replaced by Gas.In turn the Gas supply has been installed into the roadway and the boiler is now fully operative. The new boiler is smaller than the old one and with the removal of the Oil Tank space has been created to accommodate the new Sub station. The plinth upon which the station will sit is currently being built and everything is expected to be completed by the middle of October. The cost has been approximately £70,000 of which Town Centre Partnership have contributed £20,000 from sponsorship. The remainder has come from the Board of Administration allocation and the Treasury and Resource Department whom are responsible for the building.

The scheme is very exciting and will create one of the few open spaces in St Peter Port. There will be an al fresco dining area which will accomodate seating for 44 people and within the public section a designated performance area for entertainment and sufficient space to erect a marquis for special events. The area will be well lit and the road will be pedestrianised for the majority of the day.The intention is to surface the road with a circular design of Cobbles which will make the walkway attractive.

The Central Property Unit of Treasury and Resources Department have been supportive of the scheme and have agreed that the Town Centre Partnership will have control of the area in order to arrange Entertainment and useage of the public space.

To date we have received excellent support from Lovell Ozanne , Comprop Guernsey Limited ( the project manager is a member of their management team), Guernsey Gas Limited, Geomarine Limited, Guernsey Electricity Limited, Cable and Wireless Guernsey Limited,Vaudin Stonemasons Limited, Ronez Limited and there are many others who have promised support through favours for the final phases of the scheme.
